“Hampton Style” Weatherboards & Trims

Search Pinterest for Australian Hampton Style and see the beauty and simplicity that makes this architectural style so attractive to the modern Australian family.

In almost every post you will see the gentleness of traditional timber look shiplap and chamfered weatherboards and the nostalgic white window architraves of a bygone era. Both have been so absent from the new construction market of the last 50 years with its’ staunch “brick & tile mentality.”

The inspiration for this styling has undoubtedly come from the manicured suburbs of North American cities where the greatest percentage of home exteriors are constructed using uPVC products such as Royal Select Vinyl Weatherboards and Triple Glazed Windows.

Foamular XPS: The Perfect Partner with Underfloor Heating.

Foamular XPS Insulation eliminates the heat loss that travels through a thermally inefficient concrete slab especially where an underfloor heating system has been installed.

Foamular is the perfect partner to underfloor heating systems. Foamular XPS establishes a thermal lock that ensures the heat produced by the heating elements is transfered uni-directionally through the flooring where it is desired, rather than the multi-directional transfer of heat being absorbed and wasted in the sub-floor.

Foamular Extruded Polystyrene Insulation can help you meet BCA, Basix and Green Star requirement when building with Masonry and Brick

Masonry, brick and concrete walls have very low thermal values. Thermal mass is the capacity of a material to absorb heat energy. A lot of energy is required to change the temperature of high density materials like concrete, bricks and tiles.  Masonry and brick are very good at storing heat but are also very good at transferring heat. Often bricks and masonry will heat up during the day, store that heat and then radiate it back into the house at night. Properly installed insulation can limit this transfer and dramatically improve energy efficiency. By placing insulation in a walling system it is beneficial in slowing the transfer of extreme heat and cold by acting as a temperature barrier that slowly releases the stored temperature over an extended period.  The temperature within the house/building will result in a stable and comfortable range, which reduces the cost of heating and cooling the building.  A high energy efficient buildings save you money.

A double brick cavity wall has an R-value of only R0.69. In comparison just 30mm of Foamular Extruded Polystyrene has an R-value of R1.07. Combining the two would provide an R-Value of 1.76 and vastly improve the walls thermal performance.

To meet BCA and BASIX requirements, Foamular XPS in various thicknesses can be easily fitted to meet thermal requirements.

The Exterior of your home is your first impression!

The exterior of your house is a significant part of your home because it gives neighbours and guests a first impression.

A worn, unmaintained exterior can bring the whole curb appeal of your home down. Deciding what is best for you and your family is a hard decision. People will tell you leave your old house and buy something new. Others will tell you to knock it down and build a new one but where will you live while it is being built?

The cost of renting and removalists are a huge expense. Staying and upgrading your existing home is an increasing popular option and easier on the bank account, rather than moving house so you can stay in the area that you know and love, an important consideration if you have kids in school.

Green Roofs becoming more popular!

Green roofs, walls and facades are becoming more common in cities across many countries. A Growing number of Australians are realising the potential of these living systems to improve the quality of their building environment to provide social, visual, environmental and financial benefits.

Green Roofs are being constructed for many reasons such as recreational spaces and architectural features and to add value to property or to achieve specific environmental benefits such as carbon capture and heat island effect reduction.

To gain full benefit from a Green Roof you must add extra insulation. Green Roofs provide very low insulation from the soil and plants, especially when wet. To achieve greater energy efficiency, added insulation is needed. Foamular Extruded Polystyrene is a closed cell board with minimal water absorption and high R-values for thickness. It is placed below the soil but above the concrete roof, creating a continuous thermal barrier and protecting the expensive waterproofing membrane. The high load bearing properties of foamular, ie, compressive strengths of 300kpa to 650kpa  means It can support pavers, decking and decorative pebble ballast providing walkways and recreation areas, as seen on the PRMA page. Tenants and owners don’t want concrete roofs they want their rooftop turned into gardens, decks and terraces created with the use of Green roofs.

Green Roofs have many benefits but for maximum benefit to the building roof area insulation should be an essential component.

Whether under pavers, decking or green roof areas the high load bearing capabilities and thermal resistant benefits of Foamular Extruded Polystyrene Insulation will lower long term energy demand.

Foamular Passes NFPA 285 Fire Test

Foamular Extruded Polystyrene insulation has successfully passed the NFPA 285 fire test in many variations giving architects options in exterior wall design.  The purpose of NFPA 285 is to test to determine that combustible foam plastic insulation, when exposed to fire on the exterior face of the wall, does not spread flame over the surface or through the core of the otherwise non-combustible wall assembly.

The 30 minute test is conducted on a full scale two story wall assembly, built as it would be in the field, on the front side of a three sided test structure. (See Figures 1 and 2 that are excerpts from NFPA 285).

The test wall, has a window in the centre of the lower floor. (Figure 3) The test scenario is that a flashover fire, unrelated to the foam plastic insulation, has occurred in the lower story room emitting a fire plume out of the room of origin through the window. Early in the 30 minute exposure the fire plume wraps around the window head, extending up the exterior surface of the wall. (Figure 4).

Foamular XPS for External Wall Insulation

Create a significant reduction in the energy needed to heat or cool your home by applying Foamular Extruded Polystyrene Insulation Sheets to your external walls.

Foamular Extruded Polystyrene commonly known as XPS is an ideal energy efficient substrate for EIFS, especially with render finishes. EIFS is an Exterior Insulation and Finish System that consists of an insulation board attached either adhesively or mechanically, or both, to the substrate. Foamular XPS sheets are lightweight and can be screw fixed directly onto studs or masonry and then finished with a Polymer Modified render system.

Foamular minimises thermal bridging, literally wrapping your home in insulation. Foamular has high ‘R’ Values (50mm=R1.78) which is guaranteed not to drop below 90% of the original value for 20 years. The modern clean look of Render will enhance the look of your home, while reducing the cost of keeping your home at a comfortable temperature with Foamulars R-value.

Extruded v's Expanded Polystyrene

There is often a great deal of confusion between expanded (EPS) and extruded polystyrene(XPS), with many people assuming they are essentially the same, but in fact expanded and extruded polystyrene are very different products.

Firstly there is the manufacturing procedure involved in creating the product. Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is made using small expandable beads that inflate with heat, and then are placed into a mould, where they expand to fit the shape. The expanded beads trap air, which gives expanded polystyrene its insulation properties, but also leaves it venerable to water absorption, reducing the insulations effectiveness over time.

Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) is made by mixing polystyrene pellets with chemicals that liquefy the pellets. A blowing agent is then injected into the mixture, forming billions of miniature air pockets. This frothing mixture is then pushed through a shaping die to give the required size and minimise wastage. Once cooled the boards can be further shaped and wastage returned into the manufacturing process.
